The Linux/Unix shell setting for your Net-ID determines what shell will be used when you log into Iowa State University's Linux Workstations. For most users, the bash shell is the preferred shell.

How to Change Your Default Shell for Linux

1) Log into ASW.
2) Click on "Manage Net-ID".
3) Choose "View/Edit your (Linux/Unix) login shell".
4) Choose a different option from the drop-down menu and select "Update Shell".

Changes to your default shell will go into effect overnight. If you need immediate access to a bash shell, you can open the Terminal, type "bash" and Enter to use bash.
